Chapter Four

I forget how many days it has been as to our unfortunate misadventure. But, either way, it has gone almost unnoticed. The effects of dehydration are running their course on the little ones. As usual, I am seen as the village idiot due to my obesity. But, I think that Ralph is finally warming up to me. Today, I suggested that we make sundials for all on the island so that we can plan our meetings at a more precise and orderly fashion than we ever could with the conch. Ralph struck my idea down. But, I think he is finally warming up to me.    As I digress, as we were on the island today, a ship came upon the misty horizon. Me and Ralph ran and tried to capture the ship's attention to the best of our ability to attract the ship's attention. When we started to fail, we suddenly remembered the smoke signals. To our dismay, as we tried to rely on the smoke signals, the fire burnt out. It seems Jack and his hunters want us to die out here. Well, the little hunting party came back with a pig, and it seemed the pig mattered more.
Ralph and I were equally disappointed with Jack's incompetence. At this point, however, I fear I may have put my foot in my mouth. I only am aware of this because when I joined Ralph in reprimanding Jack's behavior, Jack shoved me so hard my spectacle fell off and cracked on a stone. Now, blind as a bat, I was prepared to lay down the law on Jack. But, when I tried lecturing him on his behavior, he punched me square in the diaphragm. Later, at dinner, blind me was refused pork because "you didn't hunt" when Ralph and Simon refused to hunt as well. I swear sometimes I hope Jack meets an unfortunate fate.

I feel even worse for Piggy now. Not only is he the only voice of reason, but, now he's blind. And, he's being scapegoated out by Jack. Even Simon treats Piggy better than Jack does. And, Piggy is closest to second in command.
"You and your blood, Jack Merridew!" This quote is revealing of the slightly kind man Piggy is trying to become. He is one that believes more in farming and getting the food in a more civilized manner than to hunt wild game. He is not the only one tired of Jack's homocidmaniacal  behavior. Pretty much every one who isn't a hunter is. But, Piggy is the boy who is more vocal about it.
